Try These Campfire Pies on Your Next Camping Trip

Meals Around The Fire

When people go on vacation, they often go to fancy restaurants for fine dining. But those of us who own RVs know the truth — that the best meal you can have on vacation is made even more enjoyable with family and friends sitting around a fire. Campfire pies are particularly yummy.

How To Make Campfire Pies

To make campfire pies, you’ll just need bread, your favorite seasonal fruit (think raspberries, peaches, apples, and cherries) or pie filling, and a cinnamon sugar mixture. Make sure your campfire is nice and hot (you’ll usually know when the first kid sets her marshmallow on fire!), and then spray the insides of your sandwich iron with cooking spray.

Toasty

Next, you’ll place a slice of bread on each side of the iron, then make indentations in each slice of bread. In these newly formed indents, pour in a few tablespoons of your delicious fruits, then spring on a teaspoon of the cinnamon sugar. Then close up the sandwich iron and lock the handles. Place the sandwich iron in the middle of your fire and hold it there for roughly 2 to 3 minutes. You’ll know your campfire pie is done when the sides are toasted golden brown.

Careful!

This delicious treat will be very hot. Let it cool for a couple of minutes before eating. And make sure to stop by Hanner RV near Abilene, TX if you’re in need of a new RV to transport your family to and from new destinations this summer.

How to Make Mountain Pies

A Classic Campfire Treat

Traveling in your RV is great for many reasons — you can explore nature by hiking or canoeing, you can relax by the water or in a hammock with a good book, and you can swap stories around a blazing campfire. But one of our favorite pastimes is making delicious over the fire, including scrumptious mountain pies, though you might know them as hobo or campfire pies.

Get Your Skillet Ready

To make them, we recommend purchasing a pie iron, which you can find online or in an outdoor store in cast iron and aluminum varieties. Begin the cooking process by buttering two slices of bread. Next, fill them with your favorite combo of foods. It could be a sweet peanut butter and jelly sandwich (maybe throw in some marshmallows for intrigue) or a savory sandwich with cheese, meets, onions, peppers, and more.

Flip Those Mountain Pies

After building your sandwich, place it in your pie iron and place over the flames, flipping it occasionally to prevent burning. Once you’re satisfied with the level of cooking for your mountain pie, remove it from the pie iron (carefully!) and enjoy.
